No-one asked for it to be there, but there it definitely is!
This year, we encourage everyone to be more intentional in the things they choose to purchase and to join us as we put our money towards high-quality, science-backed, carbon removal projects.
If you've taken one of our courses you'll know that we follow the science. The only credible way to reach Net Zero (and beyond) is to both reduce the emissions from everything we do, and remove what we've already released from the atmosphere. This is true at government, company or individual levels. And yes, it's possible. Have hope, make progress!
Only about 5% of the offsets you can presently buy are carbon removal. About 95% of them don't take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Nearly 65% are what's called "avoidance offsets", which don't reduce emissions either. That's not ideal for making progress on climate change. So we made this.
What are carbon removal projects?
They're not the same as most offsets you can buy, these are projects that actually remove emissions and invest in a climate positive world. All projects are fully vetted with certificates published showing the amount of greenhouse gases removed. We account for every cent, and show you the receipts.
Does this make a difference?
Yes. Of course, individuals aren't to blame for The Climate Crisis, however we can all play an important role in making progress tackling it. Reducing and removing emissions are our best path to limiting climate change.

The Current Carbon Offsets Market
At present the majority of offsets that are available to buy are avoidance, rather than reduction and removal of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
Avoidance is when something that doesn't emit is able to create credits that can be then bought by those who do, to offset their own emissions. No decarbonization or reduction needs to happen. If an organization buys one tonne of carbon avoidance credits to offset one tonne of emissions from their activities, a tonne of CO2 or other gas causing heating has still been pumped out.
The current voluntary carbon market is stocked full of this type of avoidance credit. They can be bought cheaply, from a few US dollars per tonne of emissions avoided. Many argue this continues to hide the true cost of releasing billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the air every year, as well as distort how much progress is being made to really decarbonize the world.
Ways to Make An Impact
As more and more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere heat our planet (due to human activity), it's important to make investing in solutions available to everyone. Carbon removal projects are one way to start to do this. As is knowing the carbon hidden in all our stuff, so that we can make informed choices to reduce emissions from their present high level.
A hand-curated, science-backed portfolio of carbon removal solutions, that will evolve as new stuff becomes available.
A good place to start is to put a value on the emissions that are in pretty much everything we do, buy, or use. Actually removing carbon is more expensive than buying a low cost credit that says someone else avoided emitting greenhouse gases while you still did!
Portfolio-1, our first one, has a benchmark price of $150 per tonne (a metric ton) of greenhouse gases pumped into the atmosphere, because that's the approximate price suggested by numerous respected organisations and gives us a good range of options to invest in true carbon removal solutions.
Each type locks away emissions for a different amount of time. We look for verified projects that have as long as possible permanence. It varies from about 100 to tens of thousands of years.
Does the project remove emissions from the atmosphere - and lock them away - than would have been if no action had been taken? We look for the highest levels of extra carbon removal.
We love projects that have more benefits in tackling climate change and ecological breakdown than just removing or reducing emissions. We look for projects that also regenerate nature.
The year that the carbon will be removed. Ideally the sooner the better. We'll say what the vintage is, as it will vary by the project type - from this year to a few years down the line.
