Only about 5% of the offsets you can presently buy are carbon removal. About 95% of them don't take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Nearly 65% are what's called avoidance offsets, which don't reduce emissions either. That's not ideal for making progress on climate change. So we made this.
What are carbon removal projects?
They're not the same as most offsets you can buy, these are projects that actually remove emissions and invest in a climate positive world. All projects are fully vetted with certificates published showing the amount of greenhouse gases removed. We account for every cent, and show you the receipts.
Does this make a difference?
Yes. Of course individuals aren't to blame for The Climate Crisis, however we can all play an important role in making progress tackling it. Reducing and removing emissions are our best path to limiting climate change.

The Current Carbon Offsets Market
At present the majority of offsets that are available to buy are avoidance, rather than reduction and removal of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
Avoidance is when something that doesn't emit is able to create credits that can be then bought by those who do, to offset their own emissions. No decarbonization or reduction needs to happens. If an organization buys one tonne of carbon avoidance credits to offset one tonne of emissions from their activities, a tonne of CO2 or other gas causing heating has still been pumped out.
Many of the current voluntary carbon markets are stocked full of this type of avoidance credit. They can be bought for anything from a few US dollars per tonne of emissions avoided. Many argue this continues to hide the true cost of continuing to released gigatonnes of greenhouse gases into the air every year, as well as distort how much progress is being made to really decarbonize.
Ways to Make An Impact
As more and more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere heat our planet (due to human activity), it's important to make investing in solutions available to everyone. Carbon removal projects are one way to start to do this, as is knowing the carbon hidden in all our stuff so that we can make informed choices to reduce emissions from their present high level.
A good place to start is to put a value on the emissions that are in pretty much everything we do, buy, or use.
We've set the benchmark price at $150 per tonne (a metric ton) of greenhouse gases pumped into the atmosphere. That's the price suggested by numerous respected organisations for valuing the true cost of emissions. Yes, actually removing carbon is more expensive than buying a credit that says someone else avoided emitting some!
Each type locks away emissions for a different length of time. We look for verified projects that have as long as possible permanence based on the type of removal they are. It varies from about 100 to tens of thousands of years.
How much has the project removed extra emissions from the atmosphere - and locked them away - than would have been if no action had been taken. We look for the highest levels of additional carbon removal.
We love projects that have more benefits in tackling climate change and wider ecological breakdown than just removing or reducing emissions. Co-benefits are a way for us to look for projects that are also nature regenerative.
This is the year that the carbon will be removed. Ideally the sooner the better, though a few newer solutions are still scaling up. We'll say what the vintage is, as it will vary by the project - from this year to a few years down the line.
